A Tribute to Carrie Fisher For International Women's Day

A circle of women with a mission can change the world.

Margaret Mead, an early feminist icon and one of the greatest social anthropologists of the 20th century, is well known for this quote:

“Never doubt the ability of a small group of committed, thoughtful individuals to change the world. In fact, it’s the only thing that has.”

Carrie Fisher was an inspiration to women everywhere. She broke the chain of silence with her sharp wit, humor, and sass. She saw life through a unique lens. Through this lens, she changed the culture of women in America and around the world. Additionally, she championed other causes, including standing up to the stigma of mental illness. and raised the bar for mental health recovery.

It’s only fitting that we give tribute to her memory on International Womens’ Day. We’d also like to offer some samples of her juiciest, funniest, and boldest tidbits and comments:

“I want it reported that I drowned in the moonlight, strangled by my own bra.”

“At times, being bipolar can be an all-consuming challenge, requiring a lot of stamina and even more courage, so if you’re living with this illness and functioning at all, it’s something to be proud of, not ashamed of. They should issue medals along with the steady stream of medication.”

“I don’t want my life to imitate art, I want my life to be art.”

“I’m very sane about how crazy I am.”

“I’ve got to stop getting obsessed with human beings and fall in love with a chair. Chairs have everything human beings have to offer, and less, which is obviously what I need. Less emotional feedback, less warmth, less approval, less patience, and less response. The less the merrier. Chairs it is. I must furnish my heart with feelings for furniture.”

“As you get older, the pickings get slimmer, but the people don’t.”

“People are still asking me if I knew Star Wars was going to be that big of a hit. Yes, we all knew. The only one who didn’t know was George.”

“I don’t hate hardly ever, and when I love, I love for miles and miles. A love so big it should either be outlawed or it should have a capital and its own currency.”
