An article in Psychology Today recently discussed the benefits of sharing with others about your own adversity and “finding your voice.” The author discussed four important advantages that come with sharing autobiographically about your own personal and emotional experiences in life.

First, telling your stories to others can often be incredibly helpful to them. Our own words can give inspiration and awareness to others who may not know what it is like to look at life through your lens.  Alternatively, someone may identify strongly with your struggles, resilience, and perseverance in a way that they were previously unable to.

Second, telling your story to others may help you to truly “find your voice,” and learn how to express yourself in a way that others can comprehend.  Analyzing the events of your life and compiling them into a linear story can help to appreciate the events that have led you to become the person that you are today.

Third, communicating your story will often reveal what your most sincere beliefs and priorities in life are. In today’s fast-paced society, it is easy to rush through the day, week, or even year, without stopping to consider what it is in life that we truly place value on.

Fourth, through storytelling and acknowledging your own resilience, you can actively improve your own sense of well-being as well as your mental health.  Speaking about your hardships and what you have had to overcome throughout life can offer peace of mind and a great deal of hope to others.
