Here at Painted Brain, we use art therapy as a means of eliciting conversation with clients at both the community center and at affiliated organizations around Los Angeles. Obviously, we believe this is an effective intervention (otherwise we wouldn’t be doing it!). However, I’d like to explore in this post the specific positive effects of art therapy on anxiety.

According to Dr. Katherine Star, writing in “Very Well Mind,” art therapy can be very effective in treating anxiety as well as panic attacks. She writes that “art therapy provides a way to gain insight and understanding through self-expression” (Star, 2018).

Katherine Star, “art therapy does NOT require that a person has artistic experience or talent; even if you can’t draw at all, it can still be beneficial to you!” (Star, 2018).

Another article explores a similar theme to the Star article. Marlynn Wei, writing in Psychology Today, talks about new research that suggests “doing art mindfully can reduce stress”. More specifically, Ms. Wei shared that “a new study published in The Journal of Korean Medical Science shows that mindful art therapy can reduce depression and anxiety in people with heart disease.”
