Crisis Counselor

Title: Crisis Counselor: Non-Exempt, $18-$23.30/hour

Supervisor: Program Coordinator

Summary: Under the supervision of the Program Coordinator, Crisis Counselors will work with individuals, families, and groups to provide outreach, emotional support, individual and group crisis counseling, public education, and referrals to the general public impacted by the COVID pandemic. The Counselor will facilitate various one-on-one and group support sessions for the members of the general California population using a mobile chat app, phone, Zoom and/ or in-person. Counselors will use their lived experiences with mental illnesses and/or expertise in active listening and support to better help individuals dealing with mental health challenges and/or crises. Crisis Counselors are to work with their Program Coordinator in order to coordinate sessions that will best be able to support survivors on their journey to recovery.

Essential Functions

  • Facilitate one-on-one and group sessions for emotional and social support and sharing of available community resources using mobile chat app; Zoom, telephone and/or in-person support.
  • Provide written documentation of outreach engagements and individual and group sessions via mobile application data collection tool. 
  • Check-in and coordinate counseling support activities with Program Coordinators on a daily basis.
  • Commit to completing a regular weekly schedule to troubleshoot challenges and/or provide supportive information on program activities.
  • Conduct community outreach work to educate the general community about Crisis Counseling services.
  • Represent Painted Brain in the community and networks with other agencies and partners to ensure needs of survivors are met.
  • Provides presentations to community groups on disaster reactions, coping skills, stress management and the CCP.

Secondary Functions 

  • May assist Program Coordinator/Directors for special events and activities.
  • Provides other duties requested by Program Coordinator or Supervisor.
  • Supporting documentation of individuals in crisis situations and their needs.

Minimum Qualifications – Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Ability to work with multi-ethnic populations and individuals living with mental illness.
  • Able to navigate smart devices and the use of mobile applications to complete data forms.
  • Has a strong knowledge on available resources for individuals in crisis and/or experiencing mental health challenges.
  • Well-organized, self-directed, and good interpersonal skills.
  • Peer Specialist Certification (optional).
  • Eligibility of Employment. 
  • Background check.
  • Basic tech literacy such as smart device and app usage, email management and navigation, and how to download apps.
  • Cultural competency and a deep understanding of social determinants of health.
  • High school education or beyond.
  • Some experience working in mental health and human service.
  • Strong group leadership skills and the ability to manage and attend to group needs.
  • Strong conflict resolution, communication, and time management skills.

Supervisory Responsibilities—None  

Environmental Conditions (Working Conditions) 

There may be possible exposure to highly or moderately aggressive clients. While online, counselors must have access to reliable internet connection.

Mental Requirements 

Crisis Counselor must be able to accommodate distractions and interruptions due emergency situations, and exposure to inappropriate behavior and/or languages of others.
